The Annual Club Dinner and Prize Giving

The Club Dinner held at the Mykonos restaurant in Sea Point on Sunday the 20th, was a resounding success. Fantastic food and wine and a great atmosphere.
41 one people attended and Luigi, who was unable to come due to work commitments, suprised us by dropping in for drinks. Also attending were Ingrid and Cheryl.
Roger was a gallant M.C, although talking in a noisy restaurant is not easy, and  he  introduced  the winners of the Championships.
After the main course, Roger presented special category prizes.  "The penguin" went to the best dressed lady of the evening. Other prizes  presented, were "the never say die horse" to Gus and the "voodoo doll" to Gavin.
The Chairman presented 4 special prizes, a bottle of wine each to Roger and Neville for extra work done for the Club, organizing the Box League and dealing with the Council over rates.

Russel and Anita, 2013 Mixed Doubles Champs

Monday, 6 May 2013

In almost perfect conditions 4 finals were played on Sunday morning before a good number of members who saw some enjoyable rallies played in a very sporting manner .

Womens Singles:            Glynnis Gillot defeated Anita Prendergrast  6 – 0 ; 6 -2;
Mens Veterans Singles:  Mike Wolffe defeated Gus Millner  6 – 3 ; 6 – 1;
Mens Open Singles:       Tobie Mynhardt defeated Shiraz Cerfontein 6- 2 ; 6 – 1
Womens Doubles:          Wendy Fredman & Glynnis Gillot defeated Marianne Wicht & Claire von Turenhout 6-1 ; 6-2
The Bring and Braai which followed, could have better supported, but those who stayed had a most enjoyable time.

Finally, please give some thought ( a proposal will be put forward in due course) as to whether FUTURE CHAMPIONSHIPS  should be restricted to just  2 or 3 weeks and NO LONGER or, if extended, what format is preferred.

We hope to arrange another BOX LEAGUE to be played June/July – will call for entries shortly.

Finals approaching

Dear Members

I have just returned from a trip in Europe and had the pleasure of playing tennis
with Mark and Richard at their local Tennis Club outside  Bath.
http://www.lansdownclub.co.uk
A very relaxed Club with carpet courts. Clifton has another connection with this Club as the Proudfoots, Luanne and Finley are also members, in fact I saw that Finley was standing for the committee.
Membership there is about R7000 per year!

Mark and Richard send their regards and look forward to visiting in the future.

Finals are approaching and an email has been sent out by the Organising Committee
regarding the matches and a bring and braai on Sunday 5th,

The Clifton Tennis Championships

Dear Members

The Championships are winding towards a finish and we hope to complete outstanding matches by May 15th.

The Committee has realised  that the time given to complete  the tournament  is an issue.

We will put it to the members that  next years tournament will have to be played in a shorter period and those not complying will forfeit their position.

We suggest that the tournament is played in a tighter time frame, and players secure partners who will be available for the matches.

We have had  trouble this year with players going away, getting injured, withdrawing and we believe that playing to a tighter deadline will solve a lot of these issues.

The  Committee welcomes suggestions as to how the tournament can be improved.

Thanks
Nick

The Championships are going well, (for the winners).
Some surprises, well done Gavin on beating Gus.
Once again we urge contenders to communicate with all players to avoid misunderstandings
when arranging matches.
Do your best to be timely.

For the Ladies playing the Round Robin format here is a guide to the point system:

1 point for playing or being able and willing to play.
1 point for each set won.
1 point for each match won.
0 points to the pair that offers a walk over.

Here are the points to date.

The La Perla Round Robin

La Perla 3rd February 2013

This took place in rather more wind than was thought. Nevertheless there were 26 participants including guests of members. Each were assigned to be either “stayers” or “swappers” and assigned within 3 groups of 4 pairs.
According to Luigi, who has kindly arranged the trophy La Perla and the winners’ vouchers for a number of years, this was top turnout compared to earlier times.
From the 3 groups the following emerged as top of the respective groups:
·       Group 1 (Rosso) Marie Perry (swapper) with 13 points; Charl Dreyer (stayer) with 15 points
·       Group 2 (Bianco) Gavin Smith (swapper) with 16 points; Russel Dor (stayer) with 19 points
·       Group 3 (Verde) Giulio Marabini (swapper) with 18 points; Frans van Pallander (stayer) with 14 points
The following were very close in their groups: Roger Perry (stayer) with 14 points, Vanessa September (swapper)  with 15 points and Shiraz (swapper) with 17 points. His partner let him down.
The two top swappers and two top stayers played out the final with victory going to Russel Dor (9 points), followed by Giulio Marabini (7 points, Charl Dreyer (5 points) and Gavin Smith (3 points).
Thanks again go to Luigi during this difficult time; to Marianne who organised the tea, to Nick and Charl for arranging the draw and preparing the score sheets, enabling play to commence promptly. Also thanks to Neville for collecting the entrance payments.  (posted by Roger).

Thanks to Roger for his help, particularly in the final format and for the following Photographs and Videos

The New Committee

The committee has a new secretary,  Roger Trythall, replacing Mark Humble,
Neville Lampert continues as Treasurer and I continue as Chairman.
We have a new committee member, Charl Dreyer.  Gus Millner and Darel Orkin are the other two members.
Minutes of the last meeting will be posted on the notice board  and a new notice board will be installed to carry copies of the Blog and general news.
Items discussed at the last meeting were, fence maintenance, Clubhouse maintenance , rates, forthcoming championships and  membership updates.

Farewells and Welcomes

It is with sadness that we say farewell to longstanding members.
Members relocating this year are Richard and Mark moving back to England, Cheryl and Ingrid, playing at Constantia and Stan and Maureen, playing at Gardens. We sincerely hope that past members will keep up with events at Clifton Tennis Club and are welcome to visit from time to time as Gilly and Dave Shreeve did a few Sundays ago.
Several members are also holding off membership due to injuries and we wish speedy recovery to Carol, Nadine, Mare and Paula and  also hope to see Pat and Barry back on the courts soon.
We  also extend a warm welcome  to  the several new Members who have recently joined.
Alison Montague, Michael Fouche, Michael Wolffe and Preben Skak-Jensen and Claire Van Turenhout.

Social Tennis

Social tennis has been lively lately as we start a new year.  Weather permitting.

Security

A  brazen thief walked into the Toilets and rifled the cash box while Social tennis was underway last Sunday. He claimed to be a council worker and cleverly left no suspicious
evidence. On closer inspection he had cut through the padlock clasp and left all the envelopes behind.
The committee is discussing what further security measures can be taken but we do advise all members not to leave valuables around the clubhouse while unattended and to confront strangers who walk into the Club grounds.
