Mixed Doubles Finals

Dear Members

The Mixed Doubles was played today between Glynis Shiraz, Gus and Marianne after the courts were finally dry at 11 am.
Glynis and Shiraz took the first set after interruption from a short rain storm.
The second set continued after a wait of an hour and a half with several members helping to squeegee the courts.
Shiraz and Glynis took the match in 2 sets.

The matches still outstanding are the Ladies Doubles and the Mens Open singles.

Championship Finals

A number of us were privileged to watch 3 fine finals at the Club on Wednesday the 7th Saturday the 10th  and Sunday the 11th.
The Senior Doubles. The Senior Singles and the Open Doubles
I have already reported on Wednesday's match but about 10 members came down to watch Fred and Mike sling it out on Saturday.
Sling it out was right, it was like high noon at the old Saloon.
"Fearless Fred' stood his ground as " The Wily Wolffe" played his measured game. First round went to a tie break and a victory for Mike at 7-4 but it was a tight first set.  Fred put up a great fight in the second set but let himself down with several double faults, and Mike was able to command the set to a 6-1  victory and take the final.

This morning at 10 o'clock Gus and Geoff took on Mike and Shiraz in a fine  Open Doubles final. The final score 6-2 6-2 to Mike and Shiraz.

The La Perla Cup

Courts in action
Despite a fresh Southerly breeze, 24 participants assembled at Clifton Club House on Sunday the 2nd
of February to enter the Annual La Perla Cup competition.

Despite the wind having an upper hand at times, keen tennis was played by each of the Three Teams:
Verde, Blanco and Rosso. The 12 pairs played 3 times and the final individual scores showed who would play in the final.
Before the final Carol was the leader with 20 points, Russel the Runner up  with 18 points and Guillermo, Vanessa, Shiraz and Tobie all tied on 16 points. Tobie had to retire due to a muscle strain, which led to a tossup between the two Swappers, Vanessa and Gullermo. Unfortunately Vanessa lost the draw and Guillermo joined the final four.
This was an opportunity  for the Runner up and outsiders  to gain points to win the coveted," La Perla Grande Voucher." However after 8 games the players were all square and the original winners kept their places. Luigi kindly donated the prizes care of La Perla Restaurant.
