September to Mid October Box League closes

The final match of the September -October  Box League took place yesterday afternoon in near hurricane conditions.
Witnessed by Pat Wendy and Myself, Charl won his match against Gus 6-4 7-5. The single point helped Gus go up to box 1. Unfortunately Charl had not played enough matches to gain points although his victory against Gus in impossible wind, was very entertaining, Gus might not agree.

Many thanks to Roger for the work he has put in to make this a great success.
The Box League has raised the standard and stoked  up competitive fires...
There will be many exciting matches in the next session

And now Without any more ado ...a word  from the Organiser.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

We have closed off the box league for mid October.
May I ask that everyone makes an effort to complete their games for the sake of their other colleagues in the respective boxes. As you will see some completed 100% others were less “good”

Just a few comments: Tobie remains close to invincible, despite his ankle. Gavin has done well …….It’s the free “coaching” he receives socially. Gus re-marches to the top again. Sorry to read that Mark, Roy and Pia will not be available. Craig did well but has been too focused on watching the All Blacks play innovative rugby. Carol and Glynis have shown their determination and rewarded.

I will do my best to keep everyone informed the next couple of weeks and thereafter Mark and Gus will stand in as I follow Columbus’ route to the New World.

Best wishes and enjoy this final session

Rgds

Roger

The Clifton Tennis Club Annual Dinner at La Perla

The Annual Dinner and Prizegiving was held at La Perla restaurant in Sea Point.
The weather was rather cold so 2 long tables accommodating about 30 members were laid out in the middle of the restaurant.
It was a most enjoyable evening. A chance for members to enjoy each other's company with wine and good food.  We had special attention from the Maitre'd, Luigi, who went out of his way to accommodate  our needs while regaling us with stories about the Italian members who started the La Perla Cup.
It was particularly pleasing to have the company of  Jean Claude and Claudio.
After  the main course the Trophies were presented, much to the amusement of  the other visitors to the restaurant.
A list of Winners and Runners up is  available on the Competition page.

Spring Round Robin

The weather held out and Monday, Heritage day, was perfect for tennis.
20 members took part in the competition, gathering individual points, playing with drawn partners.
There were 2 groups of 10 players.
In Group A, Martin Cohen had  27 points followed by John Dumsday with 19 points and Darel and Ivor tied with 18.
In Group B, Russel had the most points with 25, followed by Wendy with 21 and Pat with 19.
Unfortunately Martin had to leave for a lunch engagement which meant that the final was played between Russel, Wendy, Ivor and John.
A new format allowed each player to exchange for 3 sets  and  a thrilling 3 match took place. Thee final result was a tie between Russel and Ivor with John and Wendy as runners up.

The Tennis Season opens Officially

After one of the wettest  Winters  ever,  Capetonians are relishing the welcome spring weather.
The Tennis Club has been busy, with social and Box League games.
Traditionally the season opens with a Round Robin. Previously, the La Perla Cup.
The La Perla Round Robin has now been moved to  late Summer  to include our overseas members.
The Spring Round Robin will now take place on Heritage day, this year and hopefully in the future.
As is befitting the Heritage custom, there will be a Braai, weather permitting!
The Round Robin kicks off at 9 on Monday. The deadline is Saturday if you still have not entered.

The Annual Club Dinner will take place at La Perla Restaurant  in Sea Point on Sat Oct the 6th.
Holders of trophies are required to bring their trophies to the dinner.

I spent  July in Canada which experienced the hottest and driest summer in 70 years.
We found a single all weather tennis court in the nearby town of Shawville (population 4000).

Due to the enthusiasm of our Austrian neighbours, we played tennis almost every day, at 7. 30 in the morning to beat the heat. Even on the rare rainy day, tennis was mandatory, as you can see by the
picture of Wendy and the Austrians furiously scrubbing the decks.

The extreme heat in Canada had it's benefits. The animals were coming out of the bush to cool off.

This is a picture of Mildred the Moose having a swim in the lake.

Tennis Al la Mode

If any one was wondering  who Gus was named after?

Take a look at the famous Gorgeous Gussie Moran

In 1949, 'Gorgeous Gussie' asked the Wimbledon organisers if she could wear coloured clothing. Her request was turned down, so tennis fashion designer Ted Tinling created a dress incorporating lacetrimmed knickers which even triggered a debate in parliament.
